The Perfect Home Brew

What you need:

Plunger/French Press Coffee Maker

Electric or Hand Burr Grinder

Filtered Water (optional)

Scales (optional)

Timer

Fresh Beans

Kettle

Method:

  1. Boil filtered water (ideally to 96 degrees).

  2. Weigh beans (6g-10g coffee to 100ml water, adjust according to taste).

  3. Grind beans (a courser grind is better for plunger).

  4. Pour small amount of hot water and swirl around in plunger, tip out.

  5. Add coffee to empty plunger.

  6. Pour in hot water, immersing all grounds.

  7. Start timer for 4 minutes.

  8. Stir with spoon, in same direction, this ensures all grounds are covered and degasses the coffee.

  9. Sit plunger lid on top but don't push it down.

  10. When timer goes, gently push down plunger.

  11. Coffee is now ready to be served.

Plunging

What you need:

Pour-over cone eg. Hario v60

Paper filter

Decanter

Electric or Hand Burr Grinder

Filtered Water

Scales

Timer

Method:

  1. Boil filtered water (ideally to 96 degrees)

  2. Place filter in pour-over cone and rinse with 500ml of boiling water to pre-heat and lose the paper taste. Discard water.

  3. Weigh 12g filter coffee beans, grind medium-to-fine.

  4. Position V-60 over a decanter and place ground coffee in pour-over cone.

  5. Start timer.

  6. Add 50ml of hot water (ideally 96 degrees).

  7. Let the coffee swell and then stir 6-8 times to wet all the grounds.

  8. At 30 seconds add another 50ml of hot water, pouring in a circular motion from the centre.

  9. At one minute pour another 100ml over the coffee.

  10. Gently tap V-60 to settle all the grounds.

  11. Wait for V-60 to empty.

  12. Coffee ready to be served.

What you need:

Aeropress

Paper filter

Decanter

Electric or Hand Burr Grinder

Filtered Water

Scales

Timer

Kettle

Method:

  1. Preheat Aeropress and rinse filter with boiling water.

  2. Weigh out 15g of filter coffee beans.

  3. Set up Aeropress in an inverted position.

  4. Add ground coffee and then pour 250ml of water (ideally at 96 degrees).

  5. Start timer for 3-4 mins

  6. Stir the coffee to create some agitation.

  7. Fit the filter and press out all the air until you start to see coffee.

  8. Flip the Aeropress and place on decanter.

  9. When timer sounds gently press the Aeropress, stopping just before you hit the bottom.

  10. Coffee is now ready to be served.
